ENFIELD 1893 1 CHESHUNT 3
Broxbourne Borough Tournament
Monday 26th July 2010
Monday night saw us make the short journey to Broxbourne Borough FC to take part in their Festival of Football. This four team pre season tournament consists of two semi finals on Monday and Tuesday nights followed by a 3rd/4th place play off on Wednesday and the final on Thursday evening. (All 7.45pm kick offs) We were drawn against Enfield 1893 in the first semi final which saw us come up against a former Amber manager in Justin Moseley.
This was another useful game that gave us the opportunity to look at different formations and some new players. The game saw the first appearances of Junior DIAN and Sammy VANDEPEER and the return of Jimmy MARTIN. The game started very brightly with both teams trying to play football. Cheshunt had the better of the opening few minutes and took advantage of their superiority in the 7th minute when a through ball into the path of Chris MEIKLE got him in behind the Enfield defence and the striker calmly chipped the ball over the keeper to give us a 1-0 lead. Within 5 minutes Enfield had levelled. Chris MEIKLE, who was giving their defence a torrid time, was adjudged to have fouled an Enfield defender and from the resulting free kick, a long ball in our box was not dealt with and we conceded a scrappy goal.
We began to control the game with Dave HICKS running the game from the middle of the park and Matt THOMSON and Jimmy MARTIN causing problems down either wing. On 20 minutes another ball played in the path of MEIKLE put him through on goal and he made no mistake with a great finish to put us 2-1 ahead. The game should have been over by half time but MARTIN and MEIKLE both missed chances to extend our lead.
Both sides made changes at the break but again Cheshunt were the team on the front foot and within 10 minutes of the restart MEIKLE got in behind the defence and chipped the ball over the advancing keeper to complete his hat trick. A great point blank save denied Graeme DEARIE his first goal of the season and MEIKLE should have done better when through on goal on a couple of occasions but his efforts were easily saved and one shot came back off the post.
Enfield, to their credit, never gave up and they created a couple of chances late on but our defence coped superbly with everything that was thrown at them and we saw the game out quite comfortably for a deserved 3-1 win. We now play the winners of the Broxbourne Borough and Wormley match on Thursday.
Another good run out which got the players some well needed minutes on the pitch with superb performances by Billy HASPINEALL and Charles DOUSE in defence and obviously Chris MEIKLE making it five goals in two pre season games.
HATFIELD TOWN 2 CHESHUNT 3
Friendly: Saturday 24th July 2010
On Saturday we travelled to Sherrardswood School in Welwyn to take on Hatfield Town of the Molten Spartan League Premier Division in the knowledge that they were known as a physical side and would be a good test in our 1st pre season run out. It gave us the opportunity to look at some new signings (Charles DOUSE, Michael SHARMAN and Billy HASPINEALL) and some of last season's capital League side (Christiaan BEAUPIERRE, Jasper GRAHAM and Darrelle RUSSELL). It also gave us an opportunity to experiment with different formations.
The game, which was played in three 30 minute periods, started quite evenly with Hatfield looking like they were up for the challenge and throwing themselves in to every challenge. After 5 minutes their centre forward challenged for a ball with Christiaan Beaupierre which resulted in our keeper needing treatment for a boot to the head. We soon settled and quickly took control of the game with Dave HICKS running the game from the middle of the park. Our only real chance in the first half hour fell to Graeme Dearie but he put the ball over the bar from 15 yards.
We made some changes for the second 30 minutes including Glenn Williamson replacing Beaupierre in goal and Michael Sharman making his first appearance in an Amber shirt. We had hardly started when Hatfield took the lead through a very scrappy goal. A hopeful cross swung into the box somehow eluded the defenders and keeper and found its way into the corner of the net. Five minutes later the ball broke to the Hatfield left winger who fired a quick shot past Williamson putting them two up.
This seemed to spark us into life and a clever lay off from Dearie saw Hick's superb drive come back off the crossbar. A minute later we were awarded a free kick which Hicks hit with force at the keeper who spilt the ball into the path of a grateful Chris Meikle who slotted from close range. This seemed to knock the stuffing out of Hatfield and we then dominated the remainder of the match. At the end of the 2nd 30 minute period the score remained at 2-1.
We introduced Darrelle Russell and Ola Akinnawo for the last 30 minutes and their pace caused the tiring Hatfield defence major problems. A quick long ball upfield from Beaupierre got Meikle in behind the Hatfield defence and he calmly chipped the ball over the advancing keeper to level the scores. We continued to make chances and Akinawwo and Graham both missed good opportunities. With 5 minutes to go Hicks sent a free kick into the box and was met at the front post by Nick Mountford whose glancing header beat the keeper. We bossed the remainder of the game without converting any more of the chances we created and finished with a 3-2 victory.
It was pleasing that despite going 2-0 down we didn't panic but continued to play football which led to deserved win on the day.

The FA Leagues Committee have this week confirmed the make up of the various leagues in the pyramid. As expected, we remain in Ryman Division 1 North whilst both Leyton and Harlow Town have been reprieved and spared relegation. Harlow's reprieve however is dependant upon an appeal by VCD Athletic who have been removed from Step 4 after failure to achieve the necessary ground grading requirements. Joining our division will be AFC Sudbury, Needham Market and Waltham Abbey.
