CHESHUNT 0 ENFIELD TOWN 1
Ryman League Division 1 North
Tuesday 24th March 2009
Harry England reports....
The Ambers hosted local side Enfield in front of the second-largest crowd of the season in the entire league. With a good atmosphere emanating from the stadium, the game looked all set to be a thriller. Mark Carey returned to defence after absence from the Witham game at the weekend, while Ashley Taylor-Forbes made his first appearance in three weeks.
Both clubs started well, with Dan O'Connor watching a hopeful effort go just over in the early minutes for Cheshunt, and Enfield's Ellis Remy fizzed a ball across goal which was cleared by Nick Thorogood. The visitors' 'keeper Dave Walton then had to deny O'Connor again, after his swerving shot caused trouble. Then on seventeen minutes, Ola Akinnawo's superb cross should have been turned in by any one of three Cheshunt players, but somehow the ball didn’t end up in the back of the net. Harris then made a confident save, as Remy hit a powerful shot into the bottom corner, but it was palmed away well. O'Connor then had a chance to put the Ambers in front, as he noticed Walton off his line. He struck his shot, but saw it disappointingly wide. Another great flowing move from Cheshunt followed just before half-time, as a superb ball from Charlie Simpson came beautifully to Akinnawo, but his shot was well tipped over by Walton. It was the best fans had seen Cheshunt play for quite some time, and it was disappointing not to be ahead by the break.
Enfield came out the stronger side though, and just two minutes into the half, Luke Marshall's power header was cleared from the line by Gary Schillaci. Five minutes later Harris denied skipper Rudi Hall with a good save with his foot. Harris was again called into action just before the hour mark, as he made a superb tackle on Remy, after Jerome Boyce's original error let the Town frontman in on goal. Chances were pretty much even for the rest of the game, with neither side managing to trouble the goalkeeper, although Schillaci and Enfield's Nick McKoy picked up bookings. But then, seven minutes from time, Sammy Winston hit a fantastic strike, looping over Harris and into the top-corner to win the game for Enfield- a disappointing end to a game the Ambers surely dominated.
