MALDON TOWN 3 CHESHUNT 1
Ryman League Division 1 North
Saturday 15th November 2008
Harry England reports...........
After clinching a 1-0 win earlier in the season in the FA Trophy, Cheshunt were looking to return home with the points from this visit to the Wallace Binder Stadium and maintain the push for promotion.

Recently appointed ex-Spur Stuart Nethercott had seen his young side put in some solid performances since taking the reigns at Maldon and confidence was high in the home dressing room too.
Four minutes in and referee Ruberry was in the spotlight as Gary Schillaci brought down Jerome Ingram in the box but to the Ambers’ relief the challenge was deemed not worthy of a penalty. Ingram then ran at the Cheshunt defence, turning Ricky Dobson in the area before lashing his shot against the bar.
Maldon continued to make the pace and threaten the Cheshunt goal and came close in the 23rd minute when Alan Sampson headed Joe Collins’ cross onto the roof of the net but soon after the hosts were in front. Collins made good progress down the right before pulling the ball back and across goal for Ingram to tuck away into the bottom left corner.
A second shout for a home penalty came a few minutes later as Dan Johnson went down under Kai Ramshaw’s challenge but the referee, correctly this time, waved play on. Still Maldon continued to push forward and Cheshunt were hanging on. Skipper Glen Parry’s brave block from Ingram’s shot sparked a goalmouth scramble which was eventually cleared and keeper Chris Goodchild rescued us again before half time, saving brilliantly from Chris Day.

Early into the second half and Maldon finally got a penalty – a case of third time lucky for the home side as Parry’s challenge was punished. Ross Parmenter calmly put the ball past Goodchild into the bottom right corner to double the lead after Parry and Prestedge had gone into the refs’ book during the protests.
The game was clearly not going Cheshunt’s way but half way through the second period and we were handed a lifeline. Ramshaw went down under Sampson’s challenge and the second penalty of the afternoon was awarded. Gavin Taylor stepped up and made no mistake from the spot and hopes of a Cheshunt comeback were raised. It wasn’t to be however and the game was killed off seventeen minutes from time when Ingram headed home to complete a deserved victory for Maldon.
