CHESHUNT 3 WARE 3
Ryman League Division 1 North
Monday 13th April 2009

Jim Tuite reports......

An exciting Easter Monday derby saw a number of former-Cheshunt players come back to haunt their old Club at Theobalds Lane. Harry Ricketts, Sam Rose, Tony Neilson and Kai Ramshaw all returned in the Blue of Ware with Tom Tresadern returning to the starting line up for the Ambers following Ola Akinnawo's injury in the Herts Senior Cup final which has put him out of action for the remainder of the season.

Cheshunt certainly started the livelier of the two sides with Charlie Simpson heading a Tresadern cross in the opening moments followed ten minutes later by a fine volley from Bradley Harrison which fizzed past the post. However it was the visitors who took the lead in the 19th minute when Ramshaw latched onto a through ball and had time to roll a soft shot past Ashley Harris in the Cheshunt goal, much to Ramshaw's delight! Cheshunt responded with efforts from their strikers Bradford and Edwards, which were both off target, before Ware's Glenn Harvey was adjudged to have handled inside the box by Referee Richard Jaye. Julian Edwards took the resulting penalty, which was blocked by Harry Ricketts but Harrison was quickest to the loose ball and slotted the rebound into the net. Ricketts continued to make fine saves from Bradford and Glen Parry before Ware sent in a cross two minutes before the interval. Adjet Shehu's header was initially saved by Harris, only for him to lose the ball as he fell leaving Joe Stevens with an easy tap in to restore his sides lead.

Cheshunt again started the second half with urgency and soon won a corner. Charlie Simpson sent the ball into a crowded area where Harrison turned and swept the ball home to equalise. Ware took the lead only four minutes later when a Kaan Fehmi free kick was powerfully headed home by Ramshaw for his second of the afternoon. A good run and shot by Bradford followed which was half cleared off the goal line. The ball fell to Aaron Churchouse who's shot was charged down, leading to many calls for handball. Instead Jaye whistled for a free kick to Ware? Then, in the 66th minute, came the highlight of the entire afternoon when Bradley Harrison seized on an error in the centre circle and powered towards the Ware goal before unleashing a dipping shot from 25 yards that flew past Ricketts and into the net for his hat-trick. It was his ninth goal of the season, making him Cheshunt's leading goalscorer.

After such a flurry of goals, few chances followed for the remainder of the game apart from one deep into added time when Cheshunt substitute Dave Pigden sent in a tremendous cross to Glen Parry who headed the ball over the bar.
Cheshunt have one home game remaining which is next Saturday against Brentwood where, before the kick off, the Mayor of Broxbourne, Carol Crump-Eynon, will p[rent the Cheshunt player of the season award.
